I relocated to Cotonou, the economic capital of Benin Republic in January 2023; that’s two years ago. Little did I know that what lay ahead was a city teeming with life, rich in culture, and an enriching experience that was in store for me. Looking back now, I am excited to share my experiences and insights about this vibrant city through my eyes.
Since I arrived in Cotonou, I have been surprised by the hospitality of its people. The Beninese are relatively welcoming, always with a smile or some kind words in store. From the eager vendors at the local markets to the neighbours greeting you every morning.
Yes! The nightlife here is something here, it’s always as if people don’t sleep here, in fact, it is bubbling at night more than the day in most areas. People love to stay out either eating out, drinking or having fun at night.
Talking of the language barrier, it was quite challenging, but not as tough as you may think, maybe it’s because I landed in an area where Nigerians in the City reside (Akpakpa area). Randomly meeting Nigerians is a good one, also being a Yoruba speaker is a plus because there are some Youruba-speaking tribes in the country as well; popularly referred to as Anogo and a few of them as Yoruba.
I have been learning French since then but the environment is not challenging since one can easily speak English and Yoruba in major places like markets.
Indeed, I came to live nicely with Cotonou in a simple beautiful manner where Cotonou taught me. Maybe this is life going through with one movement. Such a relaxed rhythmic pace gave a big and excellent opportunity for nature’s quiet moment by the beachside hour from all corners making sightseeing possible anywhere across the city.
Of course, no place stands without its share of challenges: moving into another culture, mastering a different language, and understanding the basic systems in each country need time and extra patience. These challenges turned into teaching moments for everything I learned—resilience, adaptability, and the benefit of an open mind.
As I approach my third year in Cotonou, I am excited about what’s to come. There is still so much to be seen, stories to hear, and experiences to live. This city has become much more than a place to live; it’s become a part of who I am.
Cotonou is a city full of contrasts and surprises, where tradition meets modernity, and every day is a new adventure. In my eyes, this is a place of endless possibilities where the warmth of its people and the richness of its culture have created an environment that is as unique as it is inspiring.
My subsequent articles will focus on my different experiences, things to explore and opportunities and places to visit.
